A New Podcast

I am excited to announce my new podcast, Creative Journeys. The first episode, with Alastair Humphreys, is now live. You can listen by clicking the link above or by searching for the podcast in your favorite podcasting app.

The new podcast picks up where Travel Writing World left off. The new podcast will focus less on travel literature per se and cover broader topics like creativity, process, ideation, and practice through the stories of my guests. I’m still very much interested in place writing and travel writing, so I’ll still speak with authors in those genres. Be sure to search for and subscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcasting app. Also, help me spread the word by sharing the episode on social media and giving it review.

I will of course have time to interview guests now that my wife and I have some part-time help watching our son. I’m lucky to have spent the last 5 1/2 months as the primary caretaker of my son (my wife had to return to work while I, being a public employee/teacher, have had an unusually nice paternity leave that abutted against a free summer). But I also recognize that taking care of children renders any other type of deep, creative work extremely difficult without some help. This is a bit of knowledge that one doesn’t truly understand without being a parent, much like knowing why you shouldn’t kiss the feet of babies (I’ll spare you the details).

New Book: Anima by Kapka Kassabova

Kapka Kassabova’s new book, Anima, is now available in the UK and will be published in the USA on August 22. If you’re not familiar with her work, Kapka is the author of the acclaimed series of books Border, To the Lake, and Elixir.

I haven’t read the book yet, but I’m eager to get my hands on a copy after listening to Ryan Murdock’s conversation with Kapka on his Personal Landscapes podcast, which is always worth a listen.

Half-Frame Project Update

My 365-Day Project Film Negatives

As you know, while I haven’t had as much time to sit down and read/write/research as I would have liked, I have been able to continue with my daily photography journal. The project has now over 800 photos, a number that will yield over 300,000 combinations and over 600,000 permutations of photo pairs in my random photo pairing webpage that I will unveil in early 2025.

I think I will make it to over 1,600 photos, which will yield over 2.25 million permutations and 1.12 million combinations of photo pairs. That is now the goal.

As the photos come together, interesting patterns and themes are emerging. I’m now considering making a limited run of a small and inexpensive photography booklet on the project. Stay tuned for more information.
